Default Looking for some startinfo

Hi all,

I've been thinking of getting me a copy of guildwars and join the fight. And now that i made up my mind i would like some basic info.

First of all, i see that there's a new version out now, nightfall. Should i get this version, or should i start with factions? does it even matter??

Second of all, i've been playing wow a bit and i didn't like it. It's to much of a quest and grind rep game and not enough of a fight the enemy game. Is guildwars more of a fighting game? (from the info i find at the site it is, but always good to hear players opinions)

And last but not least, can anyone redirect me to a good info forum/site/thingy where i can get a good first sniff of which classes races and such are in the game.

I hope i'm not asking to much, and i'll see you soon ingame at the other end of your sword.

Nightfall is supposedly the most newbie friendly, but mine hasn't arrived yet so I can't vouch for that. What I can say is that Factions should be the last GW game you buy (of the current 3) as it pretty much throws you in at the deep end. Prophecies has the longest storyline but also takes quite a long time to get into it fully, but it is also fairly newbie friendly.

So buy Nightfall first, then Prophecies and finally Factions.

Start with Nightfall. It's a step above factions in many ways, especially for people new to GW. There's plenty of people around in Nightfall to help out with questions & all that, whereas in factions and Prophecies (original game), there aren't many people (relatively speaking) there right now. Prophecies would be a good second choice, as the skills, areas, missions, and the storyline is much better than the factions thing.

Most of what GW is is fight the enemy. You'll get almost everything you need to get materials for armor from the things that enemies drop. And salvaging drops is as simple as clicking on a salvage kit and then clicking on the thing you want to salvage. Also, the level cap is set at 20, and most of the game is played at that level. the reason is that this is a game about skill, not brute strength.

These forums are a good source for that. guildwiki.org is also a very good source of infor on all things GW

Ahh, a PvP type person! There's plenty of opportunities for that! You can start right off creating a level 20 character for PvP only purposes and jump right in to the 4-man random arenas, 4-man team arenas, 6-man Hero's Ascent battles, and 8-man GvG battles. Just find yourself a good guild for the last one.

The problem with starting right out with a PvP character is that you'll only have a limited amount of skills, weapons, and other things unlocked for use with that character, putting you at a disadvantage. You can unlock skills and what-not for PvP characters by playing the PvE side of things, though.

Get Prophecies (first game) or Nightfall (most recent).

Prophecies has the larger map, more to explore, the larger number of character professions available (warrior, ranger, mesmer, elementalist, necromancer, monk).

Factions is smaller, with only 2 professions available (assassin, ritualist), and a dubious PvE story.

Nightfall is smaller, with only 2 professions available (paragon, dervish). Haven't finished it yet, but enjoying the story thus far. It is a very beautiful addition to Guild Wars, but I still think you get more value for your money from the first game.

If you get Nightfall, it's likely you'll have a hard time finding a human party (if that's what you're after). Everyone seems to be taking to the Hero system...

Errr Shadow of Light.. you CAN create and play the core classes in nightfall. your not restricted to just the Nightfall character's, whether or not you own the other chapter's is irrelevant to the ability to play the 6 core classes.

So technically, Nightfall & Faction's offer's more classes than Prophecies as you have an option of 8 chars, vs only 6 in Prophecies.

I'd like to thank you all for the info, you guys really helped out

Well i'm gonna go get me a copy of nightfall now, and join in the fun.

And to kook, you read it right i'm the pvp type player hehe. But i'm gonna start in the pve end of the game. Better to grow slow and learn the tricks of the trade then to jump in at the deep end and drown

really guys, thanks.
